National Theatre

Creative Director of Music

In 2017 I was appointed as Creative Director of Music at the National Theatre. In that role I oversee all musical activity in the iconic building on London’s Southbank, and have consulted on more than 150 NT productions to date.

I work with a vast network of musicians, from instrumentalists to musical directors, from copyists and programmers to arrangers, orchestrators, and composers. Up to 200 freelancers per year form the musical backbone of the wide range of shows that feature anything from Baroque music to punk rock, in a recorded or live scenario.

In my time at the NT I have focussed on expanding the network with new individual as well as institutional relationships, raising the bar on theatre music as a crucial element of the productions, developing a strategic approach towards musical theatre, and releasing recordings of the outstanding NT scores in a new music partnership.
